A major compliment to coaching is when recruiting classes begin to outperform expectations on a consistent basis. Virginia Tech is the best example of that.
Virginia Tech, despite being No. 21 in recruiting, has a .752 winning percentage with four ACC titles in its seven years in the league.
"No question Virginia Tech is recruiting players for their system and sometimes that means they'll pull a two-star or three-star that fits like Jarrett Boykin (3-star) or Rashad Carmichael (2-star)," Brian Mohr, publisher of HokieHaven.com, said. "Their recruiting classes have drastically improved over the past five years and they have always targeted the top players around the region, especially in-state."
Found this article on Rivals talking about how recruiting rankings do not mean a win all. Pretty sweet. Thought I'd share are love for dem Hokie footballers.

Legitimate observation. Let me switch the focus, though: We've shown we can win in the ACC consistently with this Virginia-based recruiting process, but what about the bigger stage (4-6 in Bowl games last 10 years, 1-3 in BCS Bowl games, 0-3 against SEC teams in Bowls)? I'll site the 2-1 record the last 3 seasons in bowl games, but we can also look to some other big games (USC in '04, Boise State in 2010) where we didn't quite get over the hump to win a game against a superior opponent (debatable with Boise this year, I know, as to who was "better", but still...)
ReplyDeleteI hope to see our home-grown attitude take on an opponent like a Georgia or a Boise State and be able to get the big win we need to really put us over the top as a national powerhouse. Do we have one over the last several years to point to on the big (as in, National) stage? I don't see that yet.
But we still pown UVA!
didnt we beat Tennessee?
ReplyDeleteWe did beat Tennessee, the day after the Whoppahead New Year's Eve party. I believe we could beat Georgia most years. And "pown" is properly spelled "pwn". That's right yall, Bettwy just got corrected for spelling.
ReplyDeleteTouche, we did beat Tennessee, which is an SEC team. However, I still maintain my previous thoughts.
ReplyDeletethey are good thoughts. just makin sure. I hope when Beamer retires we dont skimp the big bucks on getting a new coach.
